The Toughies in Demolition Derby

One of the most popular motorsports played during county fairs is demolition derby. Unlike other motorsports where vehicles attempt to be the first to cross the finish line, drivers joining this somewhat gladiatorial sport crash their vehicles into one another while going around a muddy dirt track. The last driver whose car is still operational is the winner.

Demolition derby is a very physical sport for cars thus the vehicles must be carefully customised for both safety and durability. Since the cars are going to be bashed, hammered, and pummelled during the event, they are not purchased as brand new. In fact, they are barely reconditioned scraps that are bought from junkyards for less than 325 pounds. The units may be large 1960s or 70s sedans or station wagons. However, there are derby classes that use compact cars, SUVs, pick-up trucks, and minivans. Weird versions of the sport utilise strange vehicles such as combine harvesters, lawn mowers, and school buses.

The car is stripped of its features that are unnecessary or can potentially cause injuries such as interior fixtures, lights, plastic, trim, and glass. Complex conversions such as welding the doors shut, relocating the battery and gas tank, placing the radiator in the back seat, and removing sheet metal around the wheel wells may be necessary to improve overall safety and performance. Safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and roll bars may be also installed. Additionally, certain strengthening techniques are used to make the cars last longer.

Finally, the vehicle is repainted. The colours and patterns are often gaudy and low budget. Spray paint is used to mark slogans, names, and identification. Once this is done, the car is ready to be abused, much to the amusement of the audience.
